Dealey Plaza, 11.22.63. The magic bullet turned, the files stayed sealed anyway.

Picture the scene. It's just after 12:30 in the afternoon on November 22, 1963, and the most powerful man in the world is sitting in the back of an open-top convertible, rolling slowly through downtown Dallas, waving at the crowds. And then, in the space of about six seconds, three shots crack across Dealey Plaza and President John F. Kennedy is slumped over, fatally wounded. He's pronounced dead a few minutes later at Parkland Hospital. Now here's where the story should get simple, because within about ninety minutes the police arrest a suspect — a 24-year-old former Marine named Lee Harvey Oswald, a guy who had actually defected to the Soviet Union and then come back. Case closed, right? Except two days later, while the police are walking Oswald through their own basement on live national television, a local nightclub owner named Jack Ruby pushes through the crowd, pulls out a revolver, and shoots him dead in front of the entire country. No trial. No testimony. No explanation. And that, right there, is the empty space where sixty years of theories come pouring in. So the government stands up the Warren Commission, and in 1964 they deliver their verdict: Oswald acted totally alone, firing three shots from a sixth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository. But almost immediately, people start pulling at the threads — and the biggest one is what critics nicknamed the 'magic bullet.' For the lone-gunman story to hold, a single bullet had to pass through Kennedy's neck and then cause all of Governor Connally's wounds too, and then turn up in nearly pristine condition. To a lot of people, that just didn't add up. And then there's the film. A bystander named Abraham Zapruder happened to be recording the motorcade, and in his 26-second home movie, at the now-infamous frame 313, you can watch the President's head snap backward and to the left — which, to a lot of eyes, sure looks like a shot from the front, from the grassy knoll, and not from Oswald's window behind him. But here's the part most people genuinely don't know. In 1979, a second official U.S. government investigation — the House Select Committee on Assassinations — looked at all of it again and concluded that Kennedy was 'probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy.' That's not a message-board theory. That's stamped on a federal report. From there the suspects multiply: the CIA, the Mafia, anti-Castro Cuban exiles, the Soviets, the defense industry, even Vice President Johnson himself. This file isn't going to tell you which one did it, because the honest answer is that none of those theories has ever been proven. But what has been confirmed is unsettling all on its own — the CIA admitted it hid information from investigators, and millions of pages of files stayed locked away for decades, dribbling out past every legal deadline and all the way into 2025. And that's the real reason this case never dies. The grassy-knoll, zapruder, warren-commission and jack-ruby files each grab a thread of it, and together they add up to the granddaddy of them all: the conspiracy every other conspiracy gets measured against.
