Director Helms ordered the files burned in 1973; a clerical error left twenty thousand pages in the wrong archive, which is the only reason the word exists in public. What survived describes eighty institutions, hypnosis and 'expendables,' dosed citizens, and a Montreal clinic erasing patients on agency invoice. The theory community's darkest question is arithmetic: if the accidental remainder shows this much, what burned?
