You're a working man in San Francisco in the 1950s. A woman approaches you in a bar, she's charming, she invites you back to an apartment. You think you know how this evening goes. You have no idea that behind the mirror on the wall, a federal narcotics agent is sitting on a portable toilet with a pitcher of martinis, watching you through one-way glass — and that the drink in your hand has been laced with LSD. That is OPERATION MIDNIGHT CLIMAX, and it is DOCUMENTED. Not legend. Government record. Here are the confirmed bones of it. Beginning around 1954, under the CIA's MKULTRA umbrella, the Agency set up 'safehouses' — the U.S. Senate's own 1977 report uses that word — in San Francisco and New York City. They were run by a colorful, hard-drinking Federal Bureau of Narcotics agent named George Hunter White, working with MKULTRA. Sex workers were paid to lure men back to the apartments, where the men were dosed, without their knowledge or consent, with LSD and other drugs. Agents observed the results through one-way mirrors, cameras and microphones, trying to learn whether drugs and sex could loosen a person's tongue. So here's where it gets strange. These weren't enemy spies. They were ordinary, unwitting American citizens — men who would never be told what had been done to them. White reportedly kept the operation running for years, and later, in a much-quoted private letter, wrote without apology that it let him serve his country while doing things that were, in his words, otherwise off-limits. How do we know any of this? Because it surfaced. In the mid-1970s the Church Committee and the Rockefeller Commission cracked MKULTRA open, and in 1977 the Senate confirmed, in writing, that 'unwitting drug testing' was 'carried out in what is known in the intelligence trade as safe houses in San Francisco and in New York City.' The record even ties this wider program to the death of Army scientist Dr. Frank Olson. That is the documented spine. What's SPECULATION — and we say so plainly — is the lurid detail. Sidney Gottlieb ordered most MKULTRA files destroyed in 1973, so precise names, dates and how many men were dosed are largely gone. The one-way-glass martini image is well attested; some of the more cinematic flourishes rest on a handful of later interviews, not paper. We tell you which is which. Midnight Climax did not exist in a vacuum. It was one operation inside MKULTRA, cousin to the LSD-experiments thread and running on the same appetite for chemical control that drove Project Artichoke before it.
