Acid Tests

The agency dosed unwitting citizens for science. One of them was its own scientist.

It is a little after two in the morning in a San Francisco safe house, and a man who came in for a drink is watching the walls breathe. He does not know why. He does not know that a federal agent named George White is behind a two-way mirror, taking notes, and that the drink was laced with LSD by order of the Central Intelligence Agency. This was not a rumor. It was a line item. DOCUMENTED: LSD was the marquee drug of MKULTRA (see mkultra). Sidney Gottlieb believed acid might be a truth serum, a weapon, a key to the mind, so the CIA acquired it in quantity and tested it, often on people who never agreed. In the 1977 Senate hearings, CIA Director Stansfield Turner confirmed covert drug tests on unwitting citizens, and that some of that dosing happened in Agency safe houses in San Francisco and New York, the operation history remembers as Midnight Climax. Agents dosed colleagues, sex workers' clients, and each other. One surviving record describes a subject given a heavy dose and driven into a 'severe classic paranoid reaction,' the goal being to discredit him. This is the documented core: reckless, non-consensual, and signed off at the top. So here's where it gets strange. The same chemical the CIA hoped to weaponize slipped its leash. LSD moved from locked labs and clinical trials out into the culture, and the counterculture picked it up like a torch. The most famous thread runs through novelist Ken Kesey. DOCUMENTED/REPORTED: As a young man around 1959-60, Kesey volunteered for a government-funded drug study at the Veterans Administration hospital in Menlo Park, California, where he was given psychedelics including LSD. He walked out changed, later throwing the 'Acid Tests' that helped ignite the 1960s. Kesey and others long believed that VA study traced back to CIA-linked research, and that lineage is plausible and widely reported. But mark it honestly: the direct paper trail tying Kesey's specific study to an MKULTRA subproject is thin, so treat the tidy 'the CIA invented the hippies' story as SPECULATION/LEGEND, not proven fact. That gap is where the folklore blooms. The clean version says the Agency deliberately seeded the counterculture to defang the antiwar left. The evidence supports something messier and almost more unsettling: a secret program lost control of its own experiment, and the drug it could not weaponize helped rewire a generation on its own. Documented dosing is one thing. A grand orchestrated plot is another, and the records do not carry the second. Remember, too, that these experiments had a body count.
