Anunnaki

"Those who from heaven came." Sitchin's readers say they came for gold — and made us.

Say the word out loud — Anunnaki. It has a hum to it, doesn't it, like something you're not supposed to know. Type it into the internet and you'll fall down a shaft of ancient-alien videos, reptilian overlords, and secret gold mines. But before you fall, stop at the top of the shaft, because there are actually two completely different things wearing this one name. And keeping them apart is the whole point of this node. DOCUMENTED — and this part is not up for debate. The Anunnaki are real. They appear in genuine SUMERIAN and Akkadian texts, inscribed in CUNEIFORM thousands of years ago. The word roughly means something like 'offspring of An,' the sky god. They are the great gods of Mesopotamia, a divine assembly — deities of sky, earth, and the underworld who assign destinies, judge the dead, and star in the same epics that gave us the flood story. In myths like the 'Enuma Elish' and 'Atrahasis,' the gods create humankind for a very earthbound reason: so that people will do the labor of digging canals and farming, freeing the gods from toil. That's the real text. Divine beings, worshipped in real temples, by real people, in BABYLON and beyond. So here's where it gets strange — and where I have to switch labels. LEGEND / SPECULATION. In a series of books beginning in 1976, Zecharia Sitchin told a spectacular story: the Anunnaki, he said, were not gods at all but flesh-and-blood extraterrestrials from a hidden planet called NIBIRU. They came to Earth, he claimed, mining for GOLD to save their own dying atmosphere, and when the mining grew tiresome they genetically engineered primitive humans as a slave workforce by splicing their own DNA with early hominids. It is, I'll admit, an unforgettable story. Whole shelves and streaming catalogs have been built on it. And it is rejected by the scholars who can actually read the tablets. Assyriologists point out that the texts never call the Anunnaki visitors from space; the 'gold mining' and 'genetic engineering' are Sitchin's inventions, not translations. The labor in the myth is done first by lesser gods, then handed to humans made from clay and a slain god's blood — creation imagery, not a laboratory. The neighbor node NIBIRU has no basis in the astronomy the tablets describe. I'm not here to sneer at anyone who loves the alien version. It's a genuinely gripping myth, and myths are part of what humans do. But documenting a story is not endorsing it. The respectful move — respectful to the ancient scribes AND to you — is to say plainly: the Anunnaki are historically real deities, and the alien-engineer overlay is a modern legend laid on top of them. On the map, seat the Anunnaki at the center of a small constellation: SUMERIANS and CUNEIFORM behind them as their true origin, and three speculative threads reaching outward — to NIBIRU, to ANCIENT-ASTRONAUTS, and to the fabled GOLD-MINES. Real gods. Unreal aliens. Hold the line between them.
