Book of Enoch

Scripture the councils left out: the Watchers descend, teach forbidden arts, and father the Nephilim. Quoted in Jude, canonical in Ethiopia, and central to every fallen-angel reading of the ancient-astronaut file.

Here is a book that was almost erased from history. For more than a thousand years, most of the Western world believed it was gone, lost, quoted only in scattered fragments by ancient writers. And then, in the 1770s, a Scottish traveler named James Bruce came back from Ethiopia carrying three copies of the thing everyone thought had vanished. The Book of Enoch. Preserved, all that time, by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, which had never stopped treating it as scripture. So let's document what this text actually is. Scholars call it 1 Enoch. It is an ancient Jewish apocalyptic work, not written by one person but assembled from several older writings, the earliest parts dating to roughly the third century BCE. It is attributed to Enoch, the mysterious figure from Genesis who walked with God and, the verse says, was not, for God took him. The book claims to record what Enoch saw when he was taken up: the workings of heaven, the movements of the stars, the coming judgment. But the part that has haunted readers for two thousand years is the Book of the Watchers. And here's where it gets strange. The text expands on a cryptic passage in Genesis about the sons of God who came down to the daughters of men. In Enoch, these are the Watchers, two hundred angels who descended to Earth, took human wives, and taught humanity forbidden knowledge, metalworking, weapons, sorcery, cosmetics. Their children were the Nephilim, giants who ravaged the world, and for this corruption, the book says, the Flood was sent as a cleansing. Now, this is documented ancient literature. It is real. Fragments of Enoch in Aramaic were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, proving the book was known and treasured by Jews around the time of Jesus. The New Testament letter of Jude even quotes it directly. So why don't you find it in most Bibles? That's the genuinely interesting history. As Judaism and later mainstream Christianity settled which books were authoritative, Enoch didn't make the cut for most communities. Rabbinic Judaism set it aside. The Catholic and Protestant and most Orthodox churches excluded it from the canon. Only the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church kept it as full scripture, which is precisely why the surviving complete text comes to us in the ancient Ethiopian language of Ge'ez. We are documenting this, not endorsing the wilder claims built on top of it, and there are many. Because in the modern imagination, the Watchers and Nephilim have been pulled far from the text, tangled up with ancient-astronaut theories and the so-called Anunnaki, and used to argue for extraterrestrial visitors in the deep past. That is legend and speculation layered onto an ancient religious document. We keep the two clearly separate. And look how it radiates across our map. Enoch reaches toward the Nephilim, those fallen giants; toward the disputed Anunnaki of the ancient-astronaut mythos; and even toward the Ark of the Covenant, that other great relic tied to Ethiopian tradition. Follow the Nephilim first. On the map, the Book of Enoch sits at a crossroads of canon and cosmos, a book the world tried to forget, and couldn't.
