MKULTRA comprised 149 numbered subprojects across 80+ institutions — universities, hospitals, prisons — mostly funded through cutouts so researchers didn't know the client. Documented: the 1977 Senate hearings after 20,000 financial records survived Helms' 1973 destruction order, and the 2018 release of additional index material. Known subprojects covered LSD, hypnosis, 'expendables' testing abroad, and children's summer camps (Subproject 102). The number 149 matters to lore because the surviving index proves how much detail is permanently missing.
