Imagine you check into a respected teaching hospital because you're anxious, or you can't sleep, or your joints ache. You trust the man in the white coat. And then you wake up weeks later and you don't know your own name. That is not a nightmare. That is the documented record of the Allan Memorial Institute at McGill University in Montreal, where in the 1950s and into the 1960s a Scottish-born psychiatrist named Dr. Donald Ewen Cameron ran experiments funded, in part, by the CIA. Here is what is DOCUMENTED, not rumored. Cameron chaired psychiatry at McGill and directed the Allan Memorial Institute. His work drew money through a CIA front, the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology, as part of the Agency's behavior-control program, MKULTRA. His central theory was something he called 'depatterning' — the idea that if you could wipe a sick mind completely blank, you could rebuild it clean. So here's where it gets strange, and dark. To blank the mind, Cameron combined three things. Drug-induced sleep, keeping patients unconscious for days and weeks at a time. Massive, repeated electroshock at intensities far beyond standard therapy. And a technique of endless recorded messages played back at the patient for hours on end — a method Cameron called PSYCHIC DRIVING, which is its own case file, its own thread running straight out of this room. The results were catastrophic. Survivors emerged unable to remember their spouses, their children, how to use a toilet. Some were left, in the words later used in released records, 'permanently shattered.' These people had come in for anxiety and depression. Many never got their minds back. And this is not folklore. The National Security Archive at George Washington University holds more than 1,200 records on the program. In 1977 the U.S. Senate held joint hearings confirming MKULTRA and its unwitting human testing. In 1983, MKULTRA chemist Sidney Gottlieb was deposed in a civil case brought by Velma 'Val' Orlikow — one of Cameron's former patients — and eight other Canadian survivors, who sued the CIA. That lawsuit settled. Years later the Canadian government also paid compensation to some victims. The paper trail is real; the settlements are a matter of public record. What's disputed — and we mark it clearly as SPECULATION — is how much certain officials personally knew, and how many patients were truly affected, since Gottlieb ordered most MKULTRA files destroyed in 1973. We don't sneer at the questions, but we don't pretend the missing answers are answers. Cameron's Montreal work did not stand alone. It was one SUBPROJECT among scores stitched into MKULTRA — the same umbrella that hid the safehouses of Operation Midnight Climax and the interrogation research of Project Artichoke. And the engine humming inside The Sleep Room was psychic-driving. On the map, you'll find Montreal here at the northern edge — the sleep room. Follow the wire out of it and it loops directly into psychic-driving, and back through the wider web of the subprojects.
