Root Races

Blavatsky's cycle of humanities — Lemurian, Atlantean, and those still to come.

This one comes with a warning, because it starts as strange mysticism and ends somewhere genuinely dark. Stay with me. So here's the setup. In 'The Secret Doctrine' (1888), Madame Blavatsky — whose Theosophy node sits right beside this one on our map — laid out a grand theory of human history. She claimed humanity evolves not just physically but spiritually, passing through a sequence of great stages she called 'Root Races.' There were supposedly seven of them. We are, she said, the fifth. And the earlier ones lived on lost continents you already know from this map: the third Root Race on Lemuria, the fourth on Atlantis. That's the documented content of the idea — meaning, it is a documented fact that Blavatsky wrote it and taught it. It is NOT a documented fact about the actual human past. There were no giant etheric Lemurians. This is legend and esoteric speculation, presented here as an idea in history, not as truth. And for a while, that's mostly what it was: a mystical, cosmic story about souls climbing a spiritual ladder across drowned continents. Blavatsky's own framing was, in her mind, universalist — all of humanity marching toward the same enlightenment. So here's where it gets strange, and then troubling. Ideas travel, and they mutate in the hands of whoever picks them up. In the early 20th century, a cluster of Austrian and German occultists — figures like Guido von List and Jörg Lanz von Liebenfels, whose ideology historians call Ariosophy — took Blavatsky's spiritual Root Races and twisted them into something she had not built: a racial hierarchy. They grafted the pseudo-scientific 'Aryan' race myth onto the framework, casting one imagined race as superior and others as degenerate. And this is the part we have to document honestly and critically. Elements of this occult racial mythology fed into the ideological swamp from which Nazism drew. Historians such as Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, in 'The Occult Roots of Nazism,' have traced these threads carefully — and also cautioned against overstating them. Theosophy did not cause the Holocaust, and Blavatsky was not a Nazi. But her 'Root Race' scheme supplied vocabulary and imagery that Ariosophists and later Nazi ideologues misappropriated to dress up racism as ancient cosmic law. Let me be absolutely clear, because it matters: racial-hierarchy ideas are not valid. They are not science and they are not wisdom. The notion that human beings sort into superior and inferior 'races' has been thoroughly refuted, and it was used to justify atrocity. We document this legacy not to endorse a single atom of it, but because you cannot understand the darker corners of esoteric history if you pretend this misuse never happened. So that's the honest shape of it — a mystical evolutionary fantasy that a founder meant one way, and that far worse men bent toward hatred.
