"The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair." Their children? The Nephilim. "Mighty men of old, men of renown." And that's it. No explanation. Just a door left open. Here's what's DOCUMENTED. Genesis 6:1-4 really does contain this passage, and it really is cryptic. For centuries, readers have split into two camps over who the "sons of God" were. One reading, popular in early Judaism and preserved in the Book of Enoch, an ancient text NOT in the Hebrew or Protestant canon, says they were fallen angels, the Watchers, who came down, took human wives, and taught humanity forbidden knowledge. Their giant offspring, in Enoch's telling, are why God sent the flood. No angels required. Both interpretations are genuinely old. Both have serious defenders. Neither is settled. So here's where it gets strange.
