NATO's confirmed stay-behind armies. Some, inquiries found, stopped staying behind.

Here's a sentence that sounds like pulp fiction and is nonetheless true, admitted on the floor of a national parliament: for forty years, NATO and the CIA helped run a network of secret armies inside friendly Western European democracies, complete with hidden arms caches, code names, and members who answered to no elected official. In Italy the network was called Gladio, 'the sword.' And in 1990, the country's own Prime Minister confirmed it out loud. So let's do the careful thing this archive always does and split the DOCUMENTED core from the CONTESTED legend, because with Gladio the line between them is razor-thin and fiercely fought. Documented: the stay-behind networks were real. Their stated Cold War purpose was to stay behind enemy lines and mount resistance if the Soviets ever overran Western Europe. In August 1990, Italian PM Giulio Andreotti acknowledged Gladio's existence to Parliament. That November, the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning these clandestine structures for operating 'completely outside the law' and 'not subject to any parliamentary control,' and calling on member states to dismantle them. That's not a theory. That's an EU institution reacting to a confirmed secret. The arsenals, the NATO coordination, the decades of secrecy: on the record. But here's where it gets strange, and where honest documentation has to slow down. Around Gladio grew the 'strategy of tension' allegation: the claim that these stay-behind networks, or right-wing operatives connected to them, were involved in real terror bombings on Italian soil, Piazza Fontana in 1969, the Bologna train-station massacre in 1980, in order to spread fear and discredit the political left.
