That genuine secrecy is exactly what conspiracy theories feed on. And the membership rolls are genuinely staggering. George Washington took his oath in 1752 and was later sworn in as president with a masonic Bible. Benjamin Franklin, Mozart, Winston Churchill, Buzz Aldrin — who reportedly claimed his masonic membership on the Moon — all wore the apron. Multiple U.S. presidents and countless statesmen were Brothers. So here's where it gets strange. Because so many powerful men shared this secret handshake, a centuries-old genre of paranoia insists the Masons secretly run the world — steering wars, planting occult symbols on currency, orchestrating history from candlelit back rooms. And it's worth being fair and clear: those sweeping claims are not documented. Freemasonry is a real charitable and social fraternity that funds hospitals, scholarships, and children's programs. It is not a proven evil cabal. What's documented is a private club with rituals; what's legend is the shadow-government fantasy layered on top. The Church condemned it — Pope Clement XII banned Catholic membership in 1738. Totalitarian regimes hunted Masons; the Nazis sent them to camps.
