Eleusis, the Orphic rites, the cults of Isis and Mithras — initiatory schools of the ancient Mediterranean whose inner teachings were protected by death-penalty secrecy, and which stayed secret: after two thousand years of initiates, no one wrote down what happened in the Telesterion at Eleusis. Documented: the sites, the initiate lists (Socrates, Plato, Cicero), fragments in hostile Christian sources. Undocumented: everything else. Every later secret society — Rosicrucians, Freemasons, Theosophists — claims descent from them precisely because the vacuum cannot be checked.
