Edgewood Arsenal

Soldiers dosed with everything in the cabinet, 1948–1975. The consent forms were creative.

Imagine volunteering for a two-month posting that promises a break from regular Army duty. Better food, weekends in Baltimore, light work. You sign the papers. Then a technician places a drop of liquid on your arm, or fits you with a mask, and over the next hours the world starts to bend. Walls breathe. Voices arrive that no one else can hear. Or your own body seizes in ways you cannot control. Between 1948 and 1975, roughly 7,000 American soldiers passed through Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland, and this is the documented record of what happened to them. At Edgewood, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps ran one of the largest human chemical-testing programs in American history. The stated goal was defensive: to understand how low doses of chemical-warfare agents affected troops and to test protective gear and antidotes. The agents were not hypothetical. Soldiers were exposed to nerve agents like sarin and VX, to mustard, to the powerful incapacitant BZ, and to psychochemicals including LSD, more than 250 substances in all, documented in a multi-volume National Research Council review and the Army's own records. Here is where the ethics get thin. The men were called volunteers, and on paper they consented. But a 1975 Army Inspector General investigation found the consent process fell far short of informed, with soldiers told little about the risks or even the identity of what they were given. So here is the part that keeps this file open. Many of these men spent decades not knowing what had been done to them, unable to get answers from the government that dosed them. In 2009, the Vietnam Veterans of America sued the Army and the CIA, Vietnam Veterans of America v. Central Intelligence Agency, seeking notice of exposures and medical care. The litigation dragged for years and produced court findings that the Army had a duty to warn test subjects of health risks. The Department of Veterans Affairs now maintains a public page acknowledging the Edgewood/Aberdeen program. That is the documented anchor, and it is thick enough that legend has little room to work. What speculation does exist tends to overreach on scale, claiming tens of thousands of victims or permanent mass casualties the records do not support, and this archive marks that overreach as unproven. Now the connective tissue, and it is direct. Edgewood links to mkultra, the CIA's documented mind-control program, because they shared the same era, the same fascination with LSD and behavior-altering drugs, and in places the same personnel and supply lines. Edgewood is the Army's uniformed cousin to MKULTRA's civilian secrecy. And it links back to sea-spray, our proof-of-concept node, closing a loop: the same state that sprayed a city also dosed its soldiers. On the map, Edgewood Arsenal is where the experiment comes indoors and puts on a uniform. It is the human-body endpoint of a documented Cold War impulse to test first and tell no one, and it sits one short step from the darkest room on the whole board.
