Plato wrote of a drowned empire. Some say its survivors never stopped ruling.

Plato gave coordinates of a kind — beyond the Pillars of Heracles, nine thousand years before Solon — and swore the story came from Egyptian priests. Every generation since has found its own Atlantis: Santorini, the Azores, the Richat Structure staring up from the Sahara like an eye. The persistent version is stranger than geography: that survivors carried something out, and that the world's sudden, fully-formed civilizations are its receipts.
