And yet, for a certain slice of people, this obscure double star became the most famous alien address in the universe. Here's how that happened. So let's document the claim. In 1961, Betty Hill said that during her and her husband Barney's abduction, she was shown a three-dimensional 'star map' by the beings aboard the craft. Years later, under hypnosis, she drew it from memory: a cluster of dots connected by lines, which she said represented trade routes and travel between worlds. For a decade it was just a curious sketch. Then came Marjorie Fish. She was an Ohio schoolteacher and amateur astronomer, and she became obsessed. Using the best stellar-distance catalog available at the time, she built physical three-dimensional models of nearby sun-like stars, threading beads on wires, hunting for a viewing angle that matched Betty's drawing. After years of work, she announced a match. From a specific vantage point in space, she said, the pattern lined up, and the two 'home base' stars Betty had emphasized were Zeta Reticuli 1 and 2. In 1974, Astronomy magazine published the analysis. The story exploded. But here's where it gets shaky, and we have to document the rebuttal just as carefully. Astronomers pushed back hard. Carl Sagan and others argued the 'match' was essentially a Rorschach test, that with enough nearby stars and freedom to choose any viewing angle, you can find patterns in random dot clouds. Critics like Robert Sheaffer and astronomer Steven Soter noted the map's lines were subjective, and that Fish's star-distance data was later revised by more precise measurements, especially the Hipparcos satellite in the 1990s, which shifted the very positions the whole match depended on. When the distances changed, the pattern degraded. Here's the part most people don't know. The debate was serious enough that it played out in the actual astronomical literature, not just tabloids. That's rare. But the mainstream verdict landed on coincidence: a sincere, painstaking effort that most experts concluded found a pattern that wasn't really there. We're documenting both sides.
