Around it are illustrations: strange plants that match no known species, circular astronomical diagrams, and pages of tiny nude women bathing in green pools connected by pipes. The book takes its modern name from Wilfrid Voynich, the rare-book dealer who bought it in 1912. Now here's where it gets strange. Despite more than a century of effort, including work by professional cryptographers from both World Wars, nobody has ever definitively deciphered a single sentence. And these were the same code-breakers who cracked military ciphers that decided the fate of nations. They came up empty. People whisper about it in the same breath as the Necronomicon, the fictional book of the dead popularized in horror fiction, treating the Voynich as if it were that legend made real. And its dreamlike diagrams have drawn comparisons to the occult work of John Dee, the Elizabethan mathematician and royal advisor who claimed to record the language of angels. Neither connection is proven. Both keep the mythology alive.
