You've probably seen him and not known it. A charming man in a sharp suit standing beside Walt Disney in the 1950s, explaining space travel to American families on prime-time TV. The architect of the rocket that put men on the Moon. That's Wernher von Braun. And the reason his file goes deeper is that the smiling space visionary and the man in the SS uniform are the same person, and both parts are DOCUMENTED. Start with the record NASA itself now publishes. Von Braun joined the Nazi Party in 1937 and became a junior officer in the SS in 1940. During the war he led rocket development at Peenemuende, creating the V-2, a 46-foot ballistic missile that flew faster than 3,500 miles per hour and rained down on London and Antwerp starting in 1944. But here's the part most people don't know. The V-2s were built at an underground factory called Mittelwerk, worked by prisoners from the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp. Within a decade the SS officer was America's rocket salesman. His team built the Army's Redstone and Jupiter missiles; in 1958 a von Braun rocket launched Explorer 1, America's first satellite.
