Operation Paperclip

Sixteen hundred Nazi scientists, laundered into the space race and beyond.

Picture a boat docking in Boston Harbor in the fall of 1945. On board, quietly, are men who months earlier were building weapons for the Third Reich. No handcuffs. No trial. Some would end up with their names on American patents, on NASA org charts, on the Saturn V that carried astronauts to the Moon. This is Operation Paperclip, and here's the thing: almost none of it is conspiracy theory. It's in the archive. Start with what's DOCUMENTED. In 1945 the Joint Chiefs stood up the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency, the JIOA, to run a program first code-named Overcast, then rechristened Paperclip. Its job: scoop up German scientists, engineers, and technicians before the Soviets could, and bring them to the United States. Over the years that followed, roughly 1,600 specialists came over. The National Archives still holds the Foreign Scientist Case Files, dossiers on more than 1,500 of these men, in Record Group 330. So here's where it gets strange. On paper, President Truman had ordered that no active Nazi or war criminal be brought in. His September 1946 directive barred anyone who had been 'more than a nominal participant' in the party. But the JIOA had a problem: many of its prize recruits were exactly that. So, and this is documented, not speculation, officers rewrote the dossiers. Damning security reports were softened, party memberships downgraded, the label 'ardent Nazi' quietly erased. The paperclips fastening the doctored files to the folders gave the operation its name. The men themselves were a who's-who you'll meet elsewhere on this map. Wernher von Braun, his own node, the V-2's designer. Arthur Rudolph and Georg Rickhey, tied to the slave-labor factory at Mittelwerk. Walter Schreiber, linked to concentration-camp medical experiments. In believer circles, Paperclip is the master key, the moment America 'imported' not just rocketry but a whole apparatus of secrecy and mind control, feeding straight into MKULTRA. Some go further, tying it to the oss and its 'ratline' successors smuggling fascists out of Europe. What's fair to say: the OSS and its offspring did run parallel recruitment, and the gehlen-org, its own node, is the intelligence-world cousin of Paperclip's scientific one. What's SPECULATION: that Paperclip was a single coordinated plot to Nazify American institutions.
