You open an app. You scroll. You see a post that makes you angry, and you share it before you've even finished your coffee. Simple, right? Except here's the thing nobody wants to sit with: some of what lands in front of you was put there on purpose, by people who wanted a very specific reaction. Not all of it. Maybe not even most of it. But more than you'd like to think. This is not a metaphor. Russia's Internet Research Agency, based in St. Petersburg, ran an industrial operation of fake American personas across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to inflame U.S. politics. We know the details because Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted the organization and its operatives in 2018, laying out the accounts, the budgets, the rented server infrastructure. Documented. Charged. On the record. And here's where it gets strange, because it's not only foreign adversaries. The U.S. Department of Defense has run its own social-media influence programs. In 2022, an internal Pentagon review was launched after researchers exposed a network of fake accounts pushing pro-U.S. messaging overseas, accounts that had been taken down by the platforms themselves. The tools of manipulation are not owned by one side. But here's the part most people don't know how to handle. Once you learn all this is real, there's a powerful pull toward the maximalist version: that every trending topic is staged, every argument you have online is with a bot, every viral post is a psychological operation aimed at you personally. And that is where documentation ends and legend begins. The evidence shows coordinated campaigns exist, that they are often clumsy, frequently caught, and usually a small slice of total traffic. It does not show that the whole feed is a puppet show. Believing that is its own kind of trap, because a person who thinks everything is fake stops trusting anything real. So hold both truths.
