The USS Eldridge, rendered invisible — and its crew, the legend says, fused to the deck.

Every element traces to letters from Carl Allen, a man the Navy calls a hoaxer and the faithful call a witness. The Eldridge's logs put it in New York that day; the crew reunion laughed the story off. Yet the legend self-repairs: degaussing experiments (real) become invisibility, Einstein's unified field work (real) becomes the mechanism, and each debunking arrives, believers note, with suspicious speed and coordination. The ship was scrapped in Greece. The story never was.
