Operation PBSUCCESS

Guatemala, 1954: a fruit company, an agency, and a template that toured the hemisphere.

Here's a story about a banana company, a president who wanted to give peasants land, and the coup that history rehearsed here before it toured the continent. Guatemala, 1950: voters elect Jacobo Arbenz, a reformer who does something radical. Decree 900, a land reform redistributing uncultivated estates to landless farmers. The biggest landholder is the United Fruit Company, the American banana giant with friends in very high places, the Dulles brothers among them. Arbenz also legalizes the communist party. In Washington's Cold War fever, that's all it takes. DOCUMENTED: Under President Eisenhower, the CIA, the same shop under Allen Dulles fresh off Iran, launched Operation PBSUCCESS, authorized in 1953 with a budget around 2.7 million dollars. It followed an earlier aborted plan, PBFORTUNE, in 1952. The Agency armed and trained a small exile force under Carlos Castillo Armas, ran a fake rebel radio station, and blanketed the country with psychological warfare to convince Arbenz an unstoppable army was coming. A handful of planes bombed the capital. It was mostly theater, but it worked: Arbenz, abandoned by his own military, resigned on June 27, 1954. Castillo Armas took power. So here's where it gets dark. Declassified CIA histories, including Nick Cullather's internal account and documents posted by the National Security Archive, show the Agency compiled lists of people to be 'eliminated' and even produced an assassination manual. The CIA told Eisenhower only one man died; historians count far more, and the coup opened the door to decades of military rule and a civil war that killed roughly 200,000 people. The theories. Believers point to United Fruit and call this the purest example of the thesis that U.S. covert action serves corporate profit, not just anti-communism, the CIA as a hired gun for capital. The corporate-interest link is DOCUMENTED and undeniable here; the claim that every operation reduces to that single motive is SPECULATION. Others read PBSUCCESS as proof of a deliberate, replicable machine, and the paper trail supports the milder version: this was consciously modeled on our neighbor node operation-ajax, the 1953 Iran coup, right down to the propaganda and the hand-picked strongman. And PBSUCCESS became the template in turn. The officers and methods here echo forward into the Latin American dirty wars, the network our neighbor node condor would weave across the Southern Cone two decades later, when the region's dictators pooled their secret police to hunt dissidents across borders. On the map, PBSUCCESS is the hinge. It takes the Iran blueprint and translates it into a hemispheric idiom, proving the model travels.
