Operation PBSUCCESS
SUMMARY
Guatemala, 1954: a fruit company, an agency, and a template that toured the hemisphere.
FULL DOSSIER
Operation PBSUCCESS (1954): the CIA's overthrow of Guatemala's elected Árbenz government after its land reform touched United Fruit — documented end-to-end in the agency's own released history (Cullather's internal study, declassified 1997), including assassination list drafting (the 'K program' memos). Bernays ran United Fruit's press campaign (his own account). The template — economic interest, media preparation, coup, decades of denial, eventual archival confession — is the archive's second confirmed instance after Ajax, and why the two nodes anchor the coup file.
