The first interstellar visitor accelerated on its way out. Harvard's chair said: sail.

On October 19, 2017, a telescope on a Hawaiian mountaintop caught a faint dot moving across the sky, and within days astronomers realized they were looking at something no human had ever confirmed before. Not a comet from our own solar system. Not an asteroid orbiting our Sun. This object had come from another star. It was the first known interstellar visitor, and the Hawaiian observers gave it a Hawaiian name: 'Oumuamua, meaning roughly 'a messenger from far away, arriving first.' Here's how they knew. Everything bound to our Sun travels on a closed, looping orbit. 'Oumuamua was on a hyperbolic path, screaming in from the direction of the constellation Lyra at a speed too high for the Sun to have ever captured it. It swung around the Sun and is now leaving forever. It had been wandering the galaxy, possibly for hundreds of millions of years, before it grazed our neighborhood. So here's where it gets strange. As telescopes scrambled to study it, the light bouncing off 'Oumuamua flickered dramatically, brightening and dimming by a factor of about ten as it tumbled. The only way to explain that is an extremely elongated shape, something maybe five to ten times longer than it is wide. Picture a cosmic cigar, or as some later argued, a thin, flat disc. Nothing in our own solar system looks quite like that. And then came the detail that set the world on fire. As 'Oumuamua sped away, it accelerated. It sped up slightly more than the Sun's gravity alone could account for. Now, in a comet, that's ordinary: jets of gas boiling off the surface act like tiny thrusters. But here's the problem. When astronomers looked for the telltale glowing tail, the cloud of gas and dust every comet produces, they saw nothing. No visible outgassing. A push with no obvious source. That gap is where the controversy lives. Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb took the bold position: what if the extra push came from sunlight pressure on a thin, artificial surface, a lightsail? In other words, what if 'Oumuamua was a piece of alien technology, a probe or a derelict? He wrote a whole book, 'Extraterrestrial,' arguing we shouldn't dismiss the possibility. But here's the part most headlines skipped. The mainstream scientific community has proposed natural explanations that fit the data without invoking aliens. The leading idea: 'Oumuamua was a fragment of frozen nitrogen or hydrogen ice, a shard chipped off a Pluto-like world. Such ices can sublimate invisibly, providing that gentle push while producing no dust we could see. Others suggest a fluffy, porous 'dust bunny' structure. These explanations have real weaknesses too, and the debate is genuinely unresolved, but the scientific consensus leans natural, not engineered. The honest verdict: 'Oumuamua is almost certainly a strange natural object, and we may never be fully sure, because it's gone and it isn't coming back. We got a few weeks with the first messenger, and then it vanished into the dark. And that's why this node closes the loop back to Dark Forest Theory.
