The programmed assassin who doesn't know he's loaded. Sirhan's lawyers still argue it.

Picture it. A man walks into a crowded room, calm, ordinary. A signal is given — a phrase, a playing card, a flash of light — and something behind his eyes goes dark. He raises a weapon, he fires, and afterward he remembers nothing at all. He is not a killer. He is a tool, aimed and fired by someone you'll never see. That's the nightmare at the heart of the phrase "Manchurian Candidate." And here's why it grips you: parts of it are pure fiction, and parts of it are on the record. Start with the DOCUMENTED side. The term comes from Richard Condon's 1959 novel "The Manchurian Candidate" and the famous 1962 film — a story about a soldier brainwashed into an unwitting assassin. That's culture, not evidence. But here's the part most people don't know: at almost the exact same time, the real CIA was asking the exact same question in writing. A declassified January 22, 1954 ARTICHOKE memo — preserved by the National Security Archive — poses it plainly: could an individual "be made to perform an act of attempted assassination involuntarily" under hypnosis? The memo even sketches a scenario: drug a target at a party, hypnotize him, point him at a killing, let him be captured after. So the interest was absolutely real, and it's in the government's own paperwork. Now the crucial distinction. Interest is not the same as achievement. That very memo, and the broader record confirmed in the 1977 Senate MKULTRA hearings, points the other way on results: the CIA's own analysts judged reliable hypnotic assassination "probably" unworkable — too little control over the subject, too many variables. They dreamed it. There is no declassified proof they ever built it. So here's where it gets strange. Because that documented CIA curiosity became a permanent lens for reading real assassinations. The most cited example: the 1968 killing of Senator Robert F. Kennedy — the RFK node on this map. Sirhan Sirhan's defense has argued for decades that he was hypno-programmed, that he has no memory of firing, that he was a patsy set up to take the fall. Those are ALLEGATIONS and defense arguments, raised in court and in parole hearings — not findings that any tribunal has accepted as established fact. Courts have upheld his conviction. Present it as the claim it is. That's the whole shape of this thing. A documented dream of the programmed assassin, sitting right next to an unproven leap that says the dream came true. Both live in the same file, and telling them apart is the entire job. On the map, Manchurian Candidates connects three ways. It runs to hypno-programming, the actual science — or lack of it — underneath the whole idea. It reaches toward RFK, where the concept collided with a real death and a real trial. And it stands beside Project Monarch, the later legend that took this same fear — a human being turned into someone else's weapon — and built an entire mythology around it.
