Prophecy of the Popes

A medieval list of every pope to come. The list, note the counters, is nearly finished.

Here's a chilling little document that has haunted the Vatican for four centuries: a single list of 112 short Latin phrases, each one supposedly describing a future pope — running all the way to the very last pope in history, after whom, the text says, comes the end. And the unsettling part? People keep insisting we've nearly reached the bottom of the list. It's called the Prophecy of the Popes, and tradition attributes it to St. Malachy, a real 12th-century Irish archbishop of Armagh, a friend of the great St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The story goes that Malachy had a vision in Rome around 1139 and wrote down cryptic mottoes for every pope from his own era to doomsday — things like 'Lumen in caelo' (light in the sky) or 'De labore solis' (of the labor of the sun). So here's where it gets strange. The prophecy is uncannily accurate — but only for the popes before 1590. And that turns out to be the whole tell. Because the list didn't surface anywhere for over four hundred years. It first appeared in print in 1595, in a book by a Benedictine monk named Arnold de Wyon. There is no mention of it in Malachy's own writings, none in St. Bernard's detailed biography of his friend, and no trace of it in any Vatican record for the entire span between 1139 and 1595. For a document supposedly sitting in the papal archives, that silence is deafening. But here's the part most people don't know. When scholars looked closely, they found the mottoes fit the early popes almost perfectly — often matching their family names, birthplaces, or coats of arms — right up to about 1590, and then become vague and strained afterward. That's the fingerprint of a forgery: whoever wrote it was working backward from a reference book of past popes (probably Onofrio Panvinio's history), dressing up known facts as prophecy, and then guessing loosely for the future. Historians as far back as the 17th century, like the French priest Claude-François Menestrier, called it out as a fabrication, likely created around 1590 to influence a papal election by flattering a particular candidate whose motto fit suspiciously well. And then there's the ending — the reason this list refuses to die. The final entry describes 'Petrus Romanus,' Peter the Roman, who will 'feed his flock amid many tribulations,' after which 'the city of seven hills will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge his people.' Doomsday. When Benedict XVI resigned in 2013, the internet lit up, because by many countings the current pope is the last one. Of course, the counting only works if you fudge which entries match which popes — and people have been fudging it for centuries. So that's the Prophecy of the Popes: a 16th-century forgery wearing a 12th-century saint's name, still whispering about the end of the world.
