The Magic Bullet
EXHIBITS
SUMMARY
CE-399: pristine, on a stretcher, after breaking bones. Physics, critics say, disagrees.
FULL DOSSIER
Here's a strange and honestly kind of maddening idea: the entire lone-gunman theory of the Kennedy assassination hangs on a single bullet doing something that sounds almost impossible. One bullet. Seven wounds. Two men. And when they found it, it was nearly perfect. So let me walk you through it.
They call it CE-399 — Commission Exhibit 399 — but you probably know it by its nickname: the magic bullet. Here's the problem the Warren Commission had to solve. President Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally were hit within a fraction of a second of each other, and there weren't enough shots to go around; Oswald's bolt-action rifle couldn't be cycled fast enough for each man to have his own bullet in that narrow window. So the Commission concluded that one bullet passed through the back of Kennedy's neck, exited his throat, then entered Connally's back, shattered a rib, blew out through his chest, smashed his right wrist, and lodged in his thigh. Documented, in the report: the same missile, they said, 'probably struck Governor Connally.'
And here's where it gets strange. That bullet — after all that bone and tissue — was recovered nearly intact on a stretcher at Parkland Hospital, weighing 158.6 grains, barely deformed. Critics looked at that pristine slug and asked the obvious question: how? A bullet that breaks a wrist is usually flattened. This one looked like it had been fired into a bucket of water.
So the theories bloom. Believers argue CE-399 was planted — that a gap in the chain of custody between the stretcher and the FBI lab means nobody can prove that particular bullet ever touched anyone. They point to Connally himself, who testified to his dying day that he was hit by a separate shot — that he heard the first report and started to turn before he felt the impact. If Connally is right, one gunman can't have done it, and the arithmetic collapses into conspiracy.
Now, hold that thought — because the other side has receipts too. Documented: the bullet's ballistics matched Oswald's rifle to the exclusion of all other weapons. And in 1992 the engineering firm Failure Analysis Associates staged a full reconstruction for an American Bar Association mock trial and concluded the single-bullet trajectory actually works — that the two men were seated so a straight line runs through both, and that a bullet already slowed by Kennedy's neck can behave far more gently than intuition suggests. What looks impossible, they argued, is just unfamiliar.
So which is it — a magic trick, or ordinary physics nobody wants to believe? The honest answer is that reasonable people have stared at the same evidence for sixty years and split down the middle. This file is the load-bearing wall of the warren-commission node next door: if the single-bullet theory stands, the lone-gunman case stands with it; if that one nearly-perfect slug was ever planted or misread, the entire official story falls in a single afternoon. Everything the Commission built rests on one small piece of copper-jacketed lead — and to this day, people can't agree on what it did.
