Where Is the Gold?

Fort Knox hasn't had a full public audit since 1953. Germany asked for its gold back; it took years.

Imagine a room. Deep underground, behind blast doors thicker than a man is tall, stacked floor to ceiling, are bars of gold, more wealth in one chamber than most nations will ever see. Now imagine you are told this room exists, that it belongs, in part, to you and your countrymen, but that you will never, ever be allowed inside to see it. You just have to trust that the gold is there. So here's the question that has haunted people for fifty years: what if it isn't? DOCUMENTED: The United States stores official gold reserves in a handful of guarded locations, the two most famous being the US Bullion Depository at fort-knox, Kentucky, and the vault beneath the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in Lower Manhattan. The New York Fed vault sits on bedrock roughly 80 feet below the street and holds gold, but mostly not America's own, it safeguards bullion for foreign governments and international organizations. Fort Knox holds the bulk of the US Treasury's own gold. These facts are not in dispute. The US Mint reports Fort Knox holds roughly 147 million ounces. So here's where it gets strange. Because ever since the nixon-shock cut the dollar's tie to gold in 1971, a persistent suspicion has grown in the dark corners of the story. The Treasury's Office of Inspector General conducts annual physical audits of the 'deep storage' gold, sealing compartments after inspection so any tampering would be detectable, and reports have consistently affirmed the holdings. There have been rare, real cases of gold-plated tungsten bars turning up in private markets, which is where the fear gets its seed of plausibility. But no verified tungsten bar has ever been documented inside official US reserves. And yet the suspicion never dies, and that is the genuinely interesting thing about this node. Skeptics argue the audits are done by the same government that owns the gold, that no fully independent, publicly witnessed assay has ever been allowed, and that secrecy itself breeds doubt.
