Göbekli Tepe
SUMMARY
A temple older than agriculture, deliberately buried. Someone wanted it forgotten.
FULL DOSSIER
Göbekli Tepe was built by people who, per the textbooks, should have been chasing gazelle: eleven and a half thousand years ago, before pottery, before writing, before farming. Then — this is the detail that keeps researchers up — it was deliberately buried, all of it, carried basket by basket. You don't backfill a temple to forget it. You backfill it to preserve it, or to hide it. Ninety-five percent remains unexcavated.
