Thousands describe the same choreography of strangers. Psychiatry and forums disagree why.

So here's a knock you can't quite trace. You start noticing the same car on your street, then a stranger who seems to glance up the instant you walk by, then a run of small cruelties that feel a little too coordinated to be chance. If you've ever felt watched by a whole community at once, you are not alone, and you are not stupid for noticing patterns. Pattern-finding is what human brains are built to do. So here's where it gets strange. The fear of coordinated harassment is not pure fantasy, because governments really have done a version of it. In the United States, the FBI ran COINTELPRO from 1956 into the early 1970s, a DOCUMENTED campaign to surveil, discredit, and disrupt activists, civil-rights leaders, and dissenters. The Senate's Church Committee laid it out in cold detail: anonymous letters, planted rumors, and efforts to break up marriages and friendships. Across the Atlantic, East Germany's Stasi refined the same idea into a science they called Zersetzung, the quiet decomposition of a person's life. That is your neighbor on this map, and so is COINTELPRO. Both are real. Both are on the record. So what's documented, and what's still just claimed? What is documented is that state agencies have targeted individuals, gaslit them, and turned their own communities against them. What is NOT documented is the modern belief in a vast, decentralized civilian 'gang-stalking' network, thousands of ordinary people secretly recruited to follow one person with hand signals, colored cars, and street theater. Investigators and clinicians have never verified such a network exists, and the sheer coordination it would require strains belief. And here's the part we have to handle with care. Many people who describe gang-stalking are experiencing real, frightening distress, and some are living with conditions like paranoid schizophrenia or delusional disorder that can make ordinary coincidences feel like a hunt. That does not make their suffering fake. Pain is pain. The cruelest thing you can do to a person in that state is laugh at them. The second cruelest is to feed the fear as if it were confirmed. The honest thing sits in the middle: take the person seriously, take their history seriously, and don't pretend a proven Stasi tactic and an unproven global conspiracy are the same claim. Because that's the trap here. Real precedents like COINTELPRO and Zersetzung give the modern fear a spine, a reason to say 'they've done it before, so why not now?' And they have done it before. But 'it happened' is not 'it is happening to me by ten thousand strangers.' Hold both truths.
