The FBI's confirmed program to infiltrate and destroy dissent. Once, this was a 'theory.'

Imagine this. It's the late 1960s, and let's say you're part of some activist group — maybe antiwar, maybe civil rights. And you start noticing strange things. A weird letter shows up out of nowhere and blows up a friendship inside your group. Somebody you trusted turns out to be quietly feeding information to the police. You start telling people you think the FBI is watching you, maybe even actively messing with you — and everyone rolls their eyes and tells you you're being paranoid. Well, hold that thought. Because on the night of March 8, 1971, while basically the whole country is distracted watching the Ali–Frazier 'Fight of the Century,' a small group of antiwar activists calling themselves the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI quietly break into a little FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania. They grab every single file in the place, walk out, and start mailing those documents to newspapers. And printed across some of them is a word nobody on the outside had ever heard before: COINTELPRO. Here's what that word meant. Starting back in 1956, the FBI had been running a secret program — later confirmed in staggering detail by the Senate's Church Committee in 1976 — whose entire purpose was to 'expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize' political groups the Bureau didn't like. And we are not talking about just keeping a quiet eye on people. We're talking about planting informants, mailing anonymous forged letters designed to torpedo marriages and turn allied groups against each other, tipping off employers to get activists fired. And then there's the one that still stops people cold: in late 1964, the FBI anonymously mailed Martin Luther King Jr. a package — a tape of secretly recorded material along with a letter that many people have read as trying to push him toward taking his own life. So once it's all exposed, the Bureau shuts the program down, says sorry, and moves on. But you can't really undo something like this. Because once it's a documented, confirmed fact that your own government ran a years-long operation to sabotage lawful political movements from the inside, it becomes completely reasonable to sit in any meeting and quietly wonder who's secretly writing a report about it. Now, the wilder end of the story says COINTELPRO never actually ended — that it just changed its name and kept right on going, and that it was behind specific activist deaths. And to be clear, those bigger claims have not been proven, and this file is not going to treat them like they have. But honestly? What's already sitting on the official record is disturbing enough. COINTELPRO is the case that took 'the government is spying on us' and turned it from a paranoid punchline into a line in the Congressional Record.
