The Fort Meade Unit

A condemned barracks, a pot of coffee, and men describing the inside of the Kremlin.

There's a base in Maryland you've almost certainly driven past without a second thought. Fort George G. Meade — home to the National Security Agency, acres of parking lots, ordinary Army buildings. And in a couple of those ordinary buildings, for the better part of two decades, a small group of soldiers spent their duty hours trying to spy with their minds. That's not a tabloid line. That's the DOCUMENTED home of the U.S. Army's operational remote-viewing unit. The unit outlived its own names. It began under Army intelligence as Gondola Wish, hardened into Grill Flame, became Center Lane, then Sun Streak, before the whole effort folded into the CIA's Star Gate program in 1995. Different letterhead, same small team, same low-key rooms at Fort Meade. These weren't civilian contractors in a California lab — those were down the road in the Remote Viewing file at Stanford Research Institute. This was the operational end: real taskings, real intelligence questions, handed to viewers who then sat down and described what they claimed to perceive. So here's where it gets strange. The taskings themselves are DOCUMENTED — locating hostages, describing suspected weapons facilities, hunting for missing aircraft and, in one oft-cited case, a downed aircraft. And the results, by the government's own recording, were mixed. That word 'mixed' is doing enormous work. It means: some sessions produced sketches that lined up unnervingly well with the truth, and many, many others produced material that was vague, wrong, or useless. Both kinds of pages sit in the same declassified folders. What's LEGEND versus record matters a lot here. The legend says Fort Meade's viewers cracked cases the rest of the intelligence community couldn't — pinpointed hostages, saw inside sealed bunkers. The record is more sober: individual dramatic 'hits' are documented as claims within the files, but the program was never able to show it reliably produced actionable intelligence, which is precisely why the 1995 evaluation recommended shutting it down. Neither 'they were psychic superheroes' nor 'it was all a fraud' survives contact with the actual paperwork. What survives is stranger and more human — a serious military unit, honestly logging both its apparent miracles and its many misses. And you have to sit with the ordinariness of it. No cinematic laboratory. Just soldiers, notepads, quiet rooms, and an operational chain of command taking their sketches seriously enough to file them. Whatever you believe about the technique, the institution around it was completely real. The method these soldiers were using is documented on its own as Remote Viewing.
