The Fluoride Question

Sold as dental policy, suspected as sedation. The dose, both sides agree, is the debate.

In 1964, in a war room on a movie screen, a general named Jack D. Ripper explained to a horrified British officer why he'd just triggered a nuclear attack. It was the fluoride. The communists, he said, were putting it in the water to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids. That's Dr. Strangelove, a comedy, and audiences laughed because the fear was already real and already ridiculous. And yet, and this is the honest part, buried underneath the paranoia is a genuine scientific question that serious researchers are still arguing about today. So let's do something rare with fluoride. Let's be fair. Start with what is documented and not seriously in dispute. Water fluoridation, adjusting the fluoride in public water to about 0.7 milligrams per liter, reduces tooth decay. This is one of the most studied public-health measures of the 20th century. The CDC counts community water fluoridation among the ten great public-health achievements of that century, alongside vaccines and safer food. Fluoride hardens tooth enamel and helps reverse early decay. For a lot of people, especially kids without regular dental care, that protection is real and it matters. That's the science, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. So here's where it gets strange, and genuinely more interesting than the old conspiracy. In recent years the debate hasn't been about mind control. It's been about dose, and about children's brains. In 2024 the U.S. National Toxicology Program released a report concluding, with what it called moderate confidence, that higher levels of fluoride exposure, above 1.5 milligrams per liter, roughly twice the U.S. fluoridation target, are associated with lower IQ in children. Then in 2025 a review published in a JAMA journal reported a similar inverse association between fluoride exposure and children's IQ. This is real, peer-reviewed, and it's being taken seriously by scientists. But you have to read the fine print, because the fine print is the whole story. Most of that evidence comes from places with naturally high fluoride, well above what U.S. water systems add. The NTP itself said it could not determine whether the low levels used in U.S. fluoridation affect IQ. So there's a legitimate, unresolved scientific question here about high-dose exposure and developing brains, and there's the separate, settled benefit of low-dose fluoride for teeth. Reasonable experts disagree about where exactly the line of safety sits. That is normal science doing its job, not a cover-up. And now notice how far this is from the lore. The Cold War fear, the commie plot, the docile population, Jack D. Ripper and his bodily fluids, that's not what the NTP studied. That story has no evidence behind it, and neither does its modern cousin from our neighbor node, the claim that fluoride is calcifying your pineal gland to seal your third eye. A real question about IQ at high doses is not the same as mind control at the tap. Don't let anyone collapse the two. So we won't tell you fluoride is a plot, and we won't tell you it's beyond question either. On the map, the fluoride node sits right on the fault line, real dentistry on one side, a real dose debate in the middle, and Cold War ghosts howling on the far end, one wire running straight back to the pineal.
