Enochian Magic
SUMMARY
John Dee's angelic language, dictated through a scrying stone to the Queen's spymaster.
FULL DOSSIER
1582-87: John Dee, the age's greatest mathematician, and scryer Edward Kelley transcribed an angelic language — complete grammar, syntax, and a system of 'calls' — from sessions with a black obsidian mirror. The diaries survive in the British Library; the mirror sits in the British Museum. Linguists find Enochian's structure too coherent for glossolalia and too alien for simple invention — the debate is real and unresolved. It connects Dee's 007 espionage (the language doubled, some argue, as cipher), the Golden Dawn and Crowley (who operationalized the calls), and the Choronzon lore of what answered.
