Every close election since 1960 has spawned rigging lore from whichever side lost. Courts keep asking the folklore for evidence; the folklore keeps arriving empty-handed and undiminished.

Here's something you already know in your bones, even if you've never said it out loud. Nobody who loses a close election ever quite believes they lost it. And out of that ache, over generations, America built a whole genre of story: the stolen election. This file doesn't render a verdict on any single race. Kennedy narrowly beat Richard Nixon, the story spread that Mayor Richard Daley's Chicago machine had "stolen Illinois." DOCUMENTED reality: irregularities were alleged and litigated, but historians generally conclude Illinois alone would not have changed the national outcome. Contested, yes. Decisive, probably not. 2000: Florida. This one really did come down to a few hundred ballots and a recount that the U.S. Supreme Court ordered stopped. Afterward a consortium of news organizations funded an independent review of the ballots through NORC, and the DOCUMENTED finding was nuanced: who "won" depended on which counting standard you applied. A genuine coin's-edge, later dressed up by each side as theft. 2004: the Diebold voting-machine lore, whispers that touch-screens could be flipped. And then 2020, the biggest version yet. Claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen through fraud were tested in more than 60 lawsuits and REJECTED by the courts, including judges appointed across the spectrum. The federal cybersecurity agency CISA, and its then-director Christopher Krebs in sworn Senate testimony, called it the most secure election in American history and called the manipulation claims baseless. And when Dominion Voting Systems sued Fox News for defamation, a Delaware court ruled it "CRYSTAL clear" that the on-air claims about Dominion were false; Fox settled for 787.5 million dollars in 2023. State that plainly: the courts did not find a stolen election. They found the opposite. But here's the part most people don't know, and it's what keeps the genre alive. Real elections do contain small, real irregularities, a mis-scanned batch, a clerical error, a machine that jams. Those tiny true things are the seed crystal. The folklore takes a documented marginal glitch and promotes it, inflates it, until a rounding error becomes "the outcome." That's the pattern this file records. Not a fraud. A mechanism.
