Here's a fact that stops people cold. On September 11, 2001, three skyscrapers fell in Lower Manhattan. Two were struck by airplanes. The third was not. It was a 47-story tower called World Trade Center 7, and it came down at 5:20 that afternoon, hours after the Twin Towers, with no jet ever touching it. That single detail has fueled two decades of argument. So here's the documented record. WTC 7 stood a block north of the Twin Towers. When the North Tower collapsed, falling debris tore a gash across WTC 7's south face and started fires on multiple floors. The building's water supply for the sprinklers had been severed, so those fires burned uncontrolled for roughly seven hours. The federal investigation was run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and its final report, NCSTAR 1A, was released in 2008. NIST's conclusion was that this was a fire-induced progressive collapse, the first known instance of a tall building brought down primarily by fire. According to NIST, heat caused floor beams to expand, which pushed a critical support, Column 79, out of position; its failure cascaded through the structure. NIST explicitly examined and rejected controlled demolition. It found no evidence of a blast, noted that the explosives needed would have produced a sound of 130 to 140 decibels heard for blocks, which no one recorded, and called the use of thermite "highly unlikely," since roughly 100 pounds per column would have to be smuggled in and placed undetected. That is the documented government finding. But here's the part most people don't know. NIST itself conceded that during one stage of the north face's descent, the building fell at literal free-fall acceleration for about 2.25 seconds. To engineers, that was a modeled phase of the roughly 5.4-second collapse. To skeptics, free fall meant nothing was resisting below, exactly what a demolition would produce. That brings us to the CLAIMS. Groups like Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth argue WTC 7 was a controlled demolition. In 2019 a team at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, led by engineer Leroy Hulsey, published a study concluding that fire alone could not have caused the collapse and that near-simultaneous failure of columns was required. That is a real university study, and believers cite it heavily. But it is not the consensus finding, it was not peer-reviewed in the traditional sense, and NIST stands by its fire-based conclusion.
