Able Danger

The data-mining unit that, officers testified, flagged the hijackers a year early. Its charts were ordered destroyed.

Imagine being told, under oath, before a Senate committee, that the U.S. military had a photograph of one of the 9/11 hijackers on a chart, more than a year before the towers fell. And then imagine being told that nobody acted on it, and that the records were destroyed. That is the claim at the heart of the Able Danger file. And you need to hold it carefully, because a claim under oath is still a claim. Here's what's documented. Able Danger was a real Department of Defense data-mining effort, run out of U.S. Special Operations Command around 1999-2000, using computers to sift vast amounts of open-source and other data to map al-Qaeda's global network. That much the Pentagon acknowledges. So here's where it gets contested. Beginning in 2005, Representative Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania and a former defense intelligence officer, Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, went public with an explosive assertion: that Able Danger had identified Mohamed Atta, the man who would pilot the first plane, and three other future hijackers, well before the attacks. Weldon told Congress that Atta's name and image appeared on an analyst's chart, and he demanded to know why that warning never reached the FBI, and who ordered related data destroyed. Those specific claims are attributed to Weldon and Shaffer. They are not the settled record. Now, the part that matters most for an honest archive: the official reviews. A 2005 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing put the allegations directly on the public record. And the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General investigated and, in its 2006 report, did not substantiate the claim that Able Danger identified Atta before 9/11, finding the recollections of witnesses inconsistent and unsupported by surviving documentation. The 9/11 Commission staff likewise concluded the account could not be reconciled with the evidence. We present that as it stands: a serious, sworn allegation that the government's own reviews examined and did not confirm, not a proven cover-up. We assert no 9/11 cover-up here. We only log the dispute. Why does the file live where it does on our map? Because Able Danger is a bridge node. It reaches toward the building-7 file, that whole cluster of 'what did they know and when' questions that orbit September 11, and believers file it there as another alleged missed-or-buried warning. But it reaches forward, too, into the utah-data-center node. Able Danger was, at bottom, mass data-mining aimed at spotting a hidden network before it struck, the same ambition, on primitive hardware, that later powered the sprawling surveillance architecture people fear today. That's the thread that makes this file endure: not a settled truth about Atta, but a documented early experiment in watching everything, and a public argument, still unresolved in believers' eyes, over what it did or didn't see.
