STATUS NEVER CLOSED
SUMMARY
Where it started: interrogation, hypnosis, and the search for the off switch.
FULL DOSSIER
Project BLUEBIRD (1950), renamed ARTICHOKE (1951): the CIA's first formal mind-control programs, predating MKULTRA — 'special interrogation' research combining hypnosis, drugs, and isolation, tested on agency personnel and 'expendables.' Documented in declassified memos including the direct question of whether a man could be made to commit assassination unknowingly. BLUEBIRD is the paper trail's origin point: the moment the question 'can a mind be seized' entered a government filing system with a budget line.
