Where it started: interrogation, hypnosis, and the search for the off switch.

Picture a windowless room in 1950. The Cold War is young, the fear is enormous, and a handful of American intelligence officers are asking a question that sounds like pulp fiction but was written into a real budget: can you take control of another human being's mind? Not persuade. Control. Can you make a man talk who doesn't want to, or make him forget he ever did? So here's where it gets strange, and this one is DOCUMENTED. In 1950 the CIA authorized its first formal behavioral-control program under the codename Project BLUEBIRD. The goal, in the Agency's own framing, was defensive and offensive at once: to guard American personnel against enemy interrogation and 'brainwashing,' and to explore whether the CIA could do the same to others, extracting information, planting suggestions, and controlling behavior. The toolkit reads like a nightmare shopping list: hypnosis, drugs, and coercive interrogation, tested to see how far a person could be pushed or steered. In 1951 BLUEBIRD was renamed Project ARTICHOKE, your neighbor on this map, and the work deepened. ARTICHOKE pursued the same questions with more resources, probing hypnosis combined with narcotics, the use of chemicals in interrogation, and the grim possibility of creating amnesia or even an involuntary agent. These were not idle memos. The programs ran, spent money, and generated the institutional appetite and the methods that would soon flow into a far more sprawling successor. Because that's the real significance of BLUEBIRD. It is the documented headwater of the whole MKULTRA lineage. BLUEBIRD begat ARTICHOKE, and ARTICHOKE's concerns fed into MKULTRA in 1953, the notorious program of some 149 subprojects into behavioral modification, drugs, and mind control that a 1977 U.S. Senate joint hearing finally dragged into public light. When people talk about the CIA and mind control, this 1950 room is where the paper trail actually begins. Now, a note on honesty, because this topic breeds wild claims. What is documented is that BLUEBIRD and ARTICHOKE existed, that they researched hypnosis, drugs, and interrogation, and that they were early, real, and disturbing. What is NOT established by the record is that any of it produced a reliable 'Manchurian candidate,' a person who could be flipped into a programmed assassin on command. That remains the stuff of speculation and fiction. The documented reality is unsettling enough: a government seriously funding the question, and much of the paperwork later destroyed, which is its own kind of chill.
