A 60-meter disc on the seabed that, divers claimed, killed their electronics on approach.

You are staring at a grainy sonar printout, and your brain does what human brains always do: it finds a shape. A circle. Clean edges. A little runway-looking groove leading up to it. A Swedish salvage crew called the Ocean X Team, led by Peter Lindberg and Dennis Åsberg, were sweeping the floor of the northern Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland, hunting for old shipwrecks and lost cargo. Instead, their sonar returned a strange, roughly 60-meter-wide circular feature sitting about 90 meters down. The image spread across the internet like wildfire. People compared it to the Millennium Falcon. Headlines asked whether a UFO had finally been found, submerged and waiting. So here is where it gets strange. The dive team returned and reported odd details, that their equipment and even a satellite phone stopped working near the object, that the structure had right angles and staircase-like features, that it sat atop a pillar or pedestal. To believers, this was mounting evidence of something engineered, something that did not belong. But now let me hand you the other half of the story, the DOCUMENTED half. When geologists actually examined the samples and the setting, the extraordinary explanation quietly deflated. Volker Brüchert, a geology professor at Stockholm University, examined rock samples the team recovered and concluded they were exactly what you would expect from a seabed shaped by glaciers, including granites, gneisses, and a basaltic rock. The Baltic Sea floor was, during the last Ice Age, covered by a massive ice sheet, and glaciers are extraordinary sculptors. They drag, deposit, and mound up material, leaving behind moraines and unusual formations. The 'anomaly,' in this reading, is a natural glacial deposit, a lump of rock and sediment that the ice left behind and that sonar happened to render into a suggestively tidy disc. And that disc shape? Sonar is not a photograph. It is an interpretation of returning sound pulses, prone to artifacts, shadows, and smoothing that can make a rough natural mound look artificially round. No independent scientific survey has confirmed anything manufactured down there. The consensus among geologists who weighed in is mundane: nature, not a spacecraft. Still, the legend hangs on, because it travels in good company. The Baltic Anomaly is a cousin of the USOs, the so-called unidentified submerged objects that sailors and navies have reported slipping beneath the waves. And it rhymes with KECKSBURG, that Pennsylvania case where a fallen something was hauled away before anyone could get a clean look, both stories built on the same ache to see engineering where there may only be geology.
