The confirmed part: Germany's 1938-39 expedition mapped and claimed Neuschwabenland, and U-530 and U-977 did surrender in Argentina months after the war with cargo manifests that satisfied no one. The folklore builds from there — Base 211, disc programs relocated south, Operation Highjump's early withdrawal as a defeat. Byrd's actual quote to a Chilean paper about 'enemy aircraft flying pole to pole at incredible speed' is real, and does not help the skeptics.
