FULL DOSSIER
The 2012 phenomenon: the Maya Long Count calendar's 13th b'ak'tun ended December 21, 2012, read by New Age authors (McKenna's Timewave, Argüelles, José) and disaster lore (Nibiru collision) as transformation or apocalypse. Documented: Maya scholars (and living Maya) said repeatedly that the calendar simply rolls over, like an odometer; NASA ran a standing debunk page; nothing happened. The cleanest natural experiment in prophecy failure — and, per festinger's 'When Prophecy Fails' playbook, belief migrated rather than died: the shift became 'energetic,' the date approximate.
