Engineers proposing to replace politics with measurement, price with energy credits. Disbanded — or early.

Picture North America in the depths of the Great Depression. Banks are failing, a quarter of the workforce is out of a job, and money itself seems to have stopped making sense. And into that despair walks a movement that says, with total confidence, that the whole problem is simple: politicians and dollars are obsolete, and the answer is to let engineers run the continent using energy as currency. This is not a legend. This actually happened. It was called Technocracy. At the center of it was a colorful, self-mythologizing figure named Howard Scott, an engineer, or at least a man who presented himself as one, who in the early 1930s helped launch a group that eventually became Technocracy Incorporated. The core idea was strange and genuinely fascinating. Scott and his followers argued that prices, money, and debt were irrational, and that a modern economy should instead be measured and distributed in units of energy. They proposed replacing dollars with 'energy certificates,' units based on the joules or ergs of energy the continent produced, distributed equally to citizens and expiring so they could not be hoarded. Politicians, bankers, and price-based markets would be swept away, and the entire industrial continent, which they called the Technate, stretching across North America, would be administered scientifically by technical experts. And the movement had a look. This is documented, and it is wonderful. Members wore grey suits, drove grey cars, adopted a monad symbol, a red-and-grey yin-yang-like emblem, and organized themselves with an almost military tidiness. At its peak in the mid-1930s Technocracy drew real public attention and thousands of members before fading as the Depression eased and the Second World War pulled the country in other directions. Technocracy Incorporated technically still exists in a tiny form, a genuine historical curiosity rather than a hidden hand. So here is where it gets strange, and where we have to be careful. In recent years the word technocracy has been pulled out of the history books and given a much darker second life. In modern lore it gets used as shorthand for a sinister plan by unelected experts to seize control of society, and Scott's old energy-certificate scheme gets pointed to as the secret blueprint. That is the leap worth naming. The real Technocracy movement was an earnest, eccentric, and largely failed Depression-era reform crusade run by idealistic engineers, not a shadow government waiting in the wings. Documenting the movement is not the same as endorsing the claim that it is secretly running your life today. Which is exactly why it sits where it does on our map. Look backward and technocracy shares a border with synarchy, that older dream of rule by expert councils, of which Technocracy is arguably the most literal American expression. Look forward and its modern invocation runs straight into the great-reset and the cbdc, where those energy certificates get recast as a warning about programmable digital money and centralized control. Technocracy is the hinge, a real 1930s movement now doing double duty as a modern boogeyman.
