He was twenty-nine years old, he had a good salary, a girlfriend, a life in Hawaii — and he was about to throw all of it away on purpose. In the spring of 2013, a young contractor packed a few laptops, told his employer he needed time off for medical treatment, boarded a plane, and vanished into a Hong Kong hotel room. And then he did something that would rearrange the relationship between citizens and their governments across the entire democratic world. His name is Edward Snowden. So here's what's documented. Snowden had worked inside the U.S. intelligence community — for the CIA, and then as a contractor whose access reached into the National Security Agency. In June 2013 he handed a large archive of classified NSA documents to journalists, principally Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Ewen MacAskill, and the disclosures began appearing in The Guardian and The Washington Post. The program your neighbor node calls prism, collecting internet data from major tech companies under FISA Section 702. Programs to tap the fiber-optic cables carrying the internet's traffic. Efforts to weaken encryption. The deep machinery of the Five Eyes alliance laid bare. This wasn't one leak — it was a systematic exposure of how modern mass surveillance actually worked. The U.S. government's response was immediate: the Department of Justice charged Snowden under the Espionage Act. He fled toward Latin America but was stranded when his passport was revoked mid-journey, and he ended up in Russia, where he has remained. Now, here's where you have to be scrupulously fair, because this file documents — it does not judge for you. Since 2013, one question has never been settled, and reasonable, serious people land on opposite sides of it: was Edward Snowden a whistleblower or a traitor? On one side: his defenders point out that the disclosures triggered real reform. A federal appeals court later ruled the bulk telephone-metadata program unlawful. Congress passed the USA FREEDOM Act in 2015 to rein it in. Major companies hardened their encryption. Many call him a conscience-driven whistleblower who exposed unconstitutional overreach. On the other side: critics — including many in national security — argue he broke his oath, damaged intelligence capabilities, exposed lawful foreign-intelligence methods, and ended up sheltered by an authoritarian government. They call the harm real and the label 'whistleblower' far too generous. Both of those positions are held, in good faith, by informed people.
