The Round Table

Rhodes' will funded a secret society to run the world in English. It built think tanks instead — or as well.

Let's go back further than any of the others, to the very edge of the twentieth century. It's 1902, and one of the richest, most ruthless men in the British Empire is dying. His name is Cecil Rhodes, the diamond magnate who gave his name to Rhodesia and to the Rhodes Scholarships. And in his will, alongside those scholarships, Rhodes leaves behind a dream that sounds almost unbelievable today: a secret society devoted to spreading British rule across the world and drawing the whole English-speaking world, including a recovered United States, into one great federation. That dream didn't die with him. It found a new patron in the colonial administrator Lord Alfred Milner, and out of Milner's circle of young protégés, nicknamed 'Milner's Kindergarten,' grew a real movement. Here's the documented part. Starting around 1909 and formally by 1910, Milner's associates organized what they called the Round Table groups, semi-secret discussion circles in Britain and across the Dominions, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, pushing the idea of imperial federation, a more unified British Commonwealth. They launched a quarterly journal, The Round Table, which, remarkably, is still published today. Members like Lionel Curtis went on to help found the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, in 1920. That lineage, Round Table to Chatham House, is real and traceable in the historical record. So here's where it gets strange. Decades later, an American historian named Carroll Quigley, a respected professor at Georgetown who taught the young Bill Clinton, got access to the movement's papers. In his books 'The Anglo-American Establishment' and the massive 'Tragedy and Hope,' Quigley documented the Round Table network in detail. And crucially, Quigley admitted he largely admired it. He thought this network of insiders had done real good, even as he criticized its secrecy. But when his work reached conspiracy writers, something happened. Quigley became the star witness for a much bigger claim, that the Round Table was the hidden root of a coordinated plot by international bankers to run the entire world, a secret government stretching from Rhodes straight through to the CFR and the modern globalist order. And let's be scrupulously fair, because this one has real texture. The Round Table groups genuinely existed. They genuinely were semi-secret. They genuinely influenced imperial policy and helped birth Chatham House. Quigley genuinely wrote that a network of insiders existed. Those are documented facts. But Quigley himself complained, loudly, that conspiracy authors had twisted his careful history into something he never claimed, inflating a real but limited circle of imperial reformers into an omnipotent shadow cabal. That's the tension at the heart of this node.
