A two-year-old boy starts waking up screaming. Night after night, the same nightmare. And when he finally has the words for it, what he says stops his parents cold. He talks about a plane. About being shot down. He knows the name of a ship. He knows the name of a man he says he was, a pilot who died in a fire over the Pacific in World War Two, decades before this child was born. Cases like that are not campfire stories. They are case files, thousands of them, sitting in a research archive at a mainstream American medical school. He traveled the world, interviewed the children, and, crucially, tried to verify the specifics against records and against the family of the deceased person the child claimed to have been. Over roughly forty years he and his colleagues amassed around 2,500 documented cases. His landmark work was 'Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation.' Stevenson's method was cautious and unglamorous. He looked for children, typically ages two to six, who spoke spontaneously and specifically about a previous life, then faded from those memories as they grew. He documented patterns: statements that matched a real deceased stranger, phobias tied to that person's manner of death, and, most unsettling, birthmarks and birth defects that corresponded to wounds, sometimes cross-checked against autopsy reports. His successor, Dr. Jim Tucker, a child psychiatrist, carried the work forward with modern rigor, focusing on American cases and developing a strength-of-case scale. Tucker documented the pilot case, James Leininger, and others, and wrote 'Life Before Life' and 'Return to Life.' So here's where it gets strange, and where I have to be fair to both sides, because this is contested ground. The mainstream scientific view is skeptical, and its objections are serious. Critics point to the possibility of unconscious cueing, where eager families shape a child's vague statements into a story. They raise contamination, that a match may be found after the fact and made to fit. They note most strong cases come from cultures that already believe in reincarnation. And they invoke the hardest wall of all: there is no known mechanism by which memories could transfer between bodies. But here's the part most people don't know. Stevenson knew all of this. He titled his cases 'suggestive of' reincarnation, not proof of it. He and Tucker have always framed the work as an anomaly demanding explanation, not a doctrine.
