Pyramid Power
SUMMARY
The shape itself, enthusiasts insist, focuses an energy we've forgotten how to name.
FULL DOSSIER
Picture it: the early 1970s. You're standing in a department store, and there, next to the mood rings and the pet rocks, is a small cardboard pyramid you're supposed to sit under to feel... better. That's not a joke. For about a decade, millions of people genuinely believed that the SHAPE of a pyramid — not the stone, not the location, just the geometry — could do impossible things.
So here's where it starts. In the 1930s, a Frenchman named Antoine Bovis reportedly noticed that dead animals inside the Great Pyramid didn't rot — they mummified. (DOCUMENTED as a claim; the story itself is likely embellished folklore.) A Czech radio engineer named Karel Drbal ran with it, and in 1959 he was actually granted Czechoslovak patent No. 91304 for a "Pharaoh's Shaving Device" — a cardboard pyramid he swore would keep a razor blade sharp if you aligned it north-south and left the blade under it overnight.
Then came the book that lit the fuse. In 1970, Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder's "Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain" carried the razor-blade story to the West, and it EXPLODED. Two entrepreneurs, Bill Toth and Greg Nielsen, turned it into a movement with their 1974 book "Pyramid Power," claiming these shapes could sharpen blades, preserve food, boost plant growth, sharpen your mind, even improve your love life. "Orgone energy," some called it — a nod to the discredited work of Wilhelm Reich. People slept under wire pyramid frames. They put milk under them. They meditated inside them.
But here's the part most people don't know. When scientists actually tested this — under controlled conditions, with blind protocols — it all collapsed. The apparent "mummification" was just ordinary desiccation: any dry, ventilated container does the same thing, pyramid or shoebox. Razor blades didn't stay sharper. Food didn't preserve better than in an identical non-pyramid control. The effects vanished the moment someone controlled for evaporation, humidity, and wishful thinking. This is a textbook case of the placebo of objects — and a reminder that a shape has no special powers. (Consensus: DOCUMENTED failure to replicate. The "energy" claims are SPECULATION with no physical mechanism.)
And yet the fad tells you something real about people: the pull to believe that ancient monuments hide a lost technology. That same hunger is exactly what you'll see supercharged at your next stop — the Bosnian Pyramids, where Semir Osmanagic claims entire Balkan hills are humming with "energy beams." Pyramid Power was the pop-culture rehearsal; Bosnia is the full production. And it all traces back to the original obsession — the pyramids of Giza, the monuments that started every one of these stories.
On the map, Pyramid Power sits at the crossroads: one thread runs to Giza, the source of the mystique, and another to orgone, the pseudo-energy it borrowed its language from. It's the node where a razor blade and a Pharaoh somehow ended up in the same sentence.
