Plantard even seeded a lineage that, conveniently, pointed toward himself as a descendant of French royalty, the Merovingian kings. Now, on its own, this might have stayed a curious French mystery. But in 1982, three authors, Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln, took Plantard's material seriously and published "Holy Blood, Holy Grail." That book advanced the sensational claim that the guarded secret was a bloodline, a marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. And two decades later, Dan Brown built his blockbuster novel "The Da Vinci Code" on that same scaffolding. Millions of readers absorbed the Priory as fact. But here's the part that matters. Under scrutiny, the whole thing collapsed. French journalists and researchers traced the paper trail. De Cherisey reportedly admitted to fabricating documents. And in the early 1990s, under oath in a French court connected to a separate affair, Pierre Plantard himself admitted he had invented the Priory of Sion and his royal lineage. He was told, essentially, to knock it off. He faded from public life and died in 2000. So what do we actually have?
