Imagine waking up tomorrow and the sky is in the wrong place. The sun rises where it shouldn't. Because Charles Hapgood — yes, the maps professor again — proposed something very different, which he called "earth crustal displacement." His idea: the whole rigid crust could slip rapidly over the interior, dragging continents to new latitudes in a geologic instant. He wrote it up in a 1958 book called The Earth's Shifting Crust, and even Einstein found the puzzle intriguing enough to pen a foreword. From there the idea bled into pop culture and prophecy — the "Adam and Eve story," a supposed ancient warning of a sky-turning cataclysm, and countless doomsday dates since. And here's the crucial line: mainstream geology rejects sudden crustal displacement. There is no known force that could do it, and the physical evidence — the steady seafloor magnetic stripes, the undisturbed continental record — argues flatly against continents lurching thousands of miles in days. Magnetic pole wander is real. Reversals are real. Ice ages on Milankovitch time are real. A civilization-ending crust-slide is not established science; it is a hypothesis that failed, kept alive mostly outside geology.
