Plunge Protection Team

FILE DATE 1987
CROSS-REFS 04
STATUS NEVER CLOSED
SUMMARY
The Working Group on Financial Markets. The market, believers note, stopped being allowed to fall.
FULL DOSSIER
The Working Group on Financial Markets (EO 12631, 1988, post-crash) is real and meets; 'Plunge Protection Team' was the Washington Post's 1997 coinage. Documented interventions in adjacent space: the Fed's 2019-20 repo operations, pandemic facilities buying corporate bonds. Direct equity-futures buying by the Working Group has never been documented; former Fed officials (Heller's 1989 op-ed proposing it) supplied the concept. The node holds the confirmed committee and the unconfirmed mandate the nickname implies.
