A mile-wide V over a state capital, seen by thousands — governor included.

Two events that night: the 8pm V-formation over the whole state, and the 10pm flares over the Barry Goldwater range. The Air Force explained the second and let it stand for the first. Governor Fife Symington mocked the sighting at a press conference with an aide in an alien suit — then admitted, ten years later, that he'd seen it himself: 'craft of unknown origin,' vast, silent, and witnessed by thousands who never got a better answer.
